Elopement Inspiration on Pianosa, an Ancient + Uninhabited Italian Island
In the glimmering Tyrrhenian Sea and just off the coast of Tuscany you’ll find the island of Pianosa. Almost entirely uninhabited with the exception of wildlife, nature, a handful of humans (literally: Wikipedia claims the island has a population of 10!) and ghosts of the past, the island is full of history. Pianosa was once home to ancient Romans, pirates, mafia bosses, and over 600 convicts before the penitentiary officially closed in 1998. All who remains are former prison guards who now tend the gardens and ancient buildings…and that, dear friends, is the ancient + mysterious island where we find ourselves today!
