One of the pieces of advice I heard over and over again about our wedding day was not to blink, or else the time would pass me right by. Try to slow the day down, take a moment to breathe, spend time with my new husband letting the solemnity and beauty of the celebration sink in.
I started our wedding day waking up next to Mr. Feather after getting maybe three hours of sleep. Shower. Throw on clothes. Blow dry hair. Take the dog for a long walk so he’d hopefully be more ready to face the stressful day. In hindsight, that long walk was probably more to calm my nerves than his.
Weeks before, I’d started tossing all the things I needed to bring with me on the day of into a packed bag. I’d put a lot of thought into these little details and was as excited to wear and carry them as I was to wear my dress.
First, my shoes. I’d had a difficult time finding ivory kitten heels that matched the fabric and style of my dress, but these giant toe bow shoes grew on me. I knew they were going to have a lifespan of only one day thanks to the mud in Volunteer Park, and I was absolutely right. This was the cleanest they looked all day.
I justified the expense of these little rustic vow books with our names and wedding date by saying they were more practical than carrying note cards, which might get jumbled up and out of order, and I figured we could always toss them in a shadowbox and hang them on the wall later.
