Sweetheart Wedding Gowns
When I began the initial search for a wedding dress, I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted; but I did know what I didn’t want. What follows is based on my personal taste and known comfort level, rather than a statement on others’ choices—#youdoyou and all that. ?
Knowing myself as I do and wanting to avoid being uncomfortable and self-conscious the entire day, I took the following into consideration: I have broad shoulders and have never been stick-thin; therefore, I threw out any strapless option (if only I could go back and tell my high school self this as well—#tubetops). I didn’t think a very fitted trumpet look would work, but likewise I knew I would feel silly in a cupcake-shaped ballgown. And also, I didn’t want any sparkly embellishment—no beads, sequins, or rhinestones.

Amazing ’80s trends aside, I knew I liked lace, a vague mermaid shape, and some kind of sleeve/non-strapless neckline. Weirdly, I actually had a bit of a hard time finding examples of what I wanted online. I was surprised, especially after KMid (Kate Middleton, if you’re not on a nickname basis with her) popularized sleeves again!
