Sentimentality and Simplicity: Choosing Save the Dates

By the time I was ready to pick out our save the dates, sending them at all was beginning to feel a little pointless. As soon as our date was set in stone, I started calling/texting/smoke signaling all of our nearest and dearest to ask them to mark their calendars. Since nearly all of our guests are traveling, I wanted to give as much notice as possible. So it?s not like our wedding date was going to be a surprise for anyone.
However, both Mr. Feather and I are the type of people who love hanging on to the wedding invites/save the dates of our closest friends. Friend/Best Man A?s wedding invite has survived four-plus moves and one stint in a storage locker, and escaped all of my attempts at purging our possessions. My friend W?s save the date hung on my fridge for over a year when I lived in Oakland and is now somewhere in a folder with other letters, cards, and handwritten tidbits. So, sentimentality (here?s a piece of paper to remind you of us, forever!) won out over practicality (here?s a piece of paper that you?re probably going to throw in the garbage in a few months!).
Unfortunately, we cannot take our engagement pictures until May, so any design involving professional pictures of us was out. I briefly considered getting a friend who has a nice camera to snap some shots of us on a sunny day, but I worried that they wouldn?t turn out well enough. Then I?d have to be the jerk telling our friend we didn?t want to use them. Definitely not an option.
