The Love of My Life (and It’s Not Benjamin)

I have no idea how I?ve been blogging for this long without writing a devotional to the snuggliest little teddy bear that lives in my house: Mae.
As you can clearly see, Mae is a stuffed animal who came to life. Benjamin and I adopted her three and a half years ago from a rescue organization (#adoptdontshop). She had been dropped off at a pound in Chicago, apparently accompanied by the explanation ?too expensive.? That?s pretty much the extent of our knowledge about her past—judging from her behavior, we don?t think she was abused, but she may have been neglected. She has some funny quirks, like creeping around the bedroom doorway and silently staring at us until we call her over (so cute, but also heartbreaking if she learned to do that after being scolded away).
When we got her, she was heartworm-positive, and the treatment required that we carry her up and down the stairs every single time she went out. For six months. We had to spay her (she reacted so badly to the anesthesia that we feared she might die for a full week after), she used to scream bloody murder when we left her alone (much to the chagrin of our neighbors), and after several ?accidents? on the BED we finally figured out that she needed to be grain free (PRINCESS). Now, she?s happy and healthy, and we?re so obsessed with her that we gladly hand our wallets to the vet every time.
